Sunday Golf Putting Woes Continue

This past weekend I was finally able to get together with my brother for a round of golf. The last time we played was in a tournament a few months ago, where we finished well outside the top of the leaderboard but had a fantastic time on the course.

We were not focusing on the score as much as enjoying playing golf for this round. We have been going through a cold spurt here in the Mid-Atlantic region, and a day in the mid-50’s was pleasant. We played at the Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Rising Sun, Maryland, with ease, as there aren’t many people that want to play when it starts cooling down. Playing with very people on the course is always lovely, not to mention the winter rates were in effect, which is always a good thing.

With my brother not swinging a club for several months, his expectations were low, resulting in a very relaxed day overall. For me, I was hoping to keep my score in the 80’s and hopefully break the barrier and dive into the 70’s. It is not how my day went, but I wasn’t too upset because I truly enjoyed being out and playing. I was unable to hit my driver all day. Well, let me rephrase, I had no distance on my driver. I was hitting fairways but found myself very short consistently.

My irons overall were solid, especially my longer irons. I was hitting tall, arcing shots that landed softly and stuck, which in turn gave me ample chances at birdies. However, the scorecard reads another story. Poor putting has been the death of me over the last four or five rounds. I forced myself to return to my anser-style Odyssey putter from the new mallet-style that I was testing out. Switching putters mid-round was probably a mistake; however, it needed to happen.

I finished the round with an 89 total score with a deafening 41 putts. It was a rough day on the greens, but I remember my brother saying to me, “Man, what a good day of golf.” as we unloaded our clubs after the round. I couldn’t help myself but reply, “yeah, it was, wasn’t it.”

It was nice to get out on the course, not working on anything but enjoying golf. It brought me back to why I love the game of golf so much and its experience. I will be back again soon with more breakdowns and snapshots of my progress, but I figure I would give this post the same relaxing approach as the round.
